iPhone 4S gets in troubles

Apple has confirmed that there are iPhone 4S problems -- battery issues -- and that they will be fixed ... in a few weeks. Now adding to users' frustration: Siri, the voice assistant feature on the iPhone 4s is reportedly down.

Just a "small number of customers" have complained about the battery life issue, the company says, so they'll just have to swallow their frustration, find their own fix or stick close to electrical outlets. 

A statement from Apple on Wednesday said "a few bugs" had been found that were causing the battery power drain, and "we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks."

Meanwhile, tech websites were reporting an apparent outage of Siri on Thursday. The new voice assistant feature went out about 11 a.m. Pacific time, according to VentureBeat. No word yet on whether that has been fixed.

TechCrunch reports: "It looks like Siri is experiencing an extended outage, according to several tipsters, tweets, and our own internal tests." The site notes that the feature is a Beta product -- but such a highly touted feature that an extended outage is reason to sit up and take notice.

VentureBeat says Siri is no simple tool: "When you ask Siri what the weather is like in Nashville, Tenn., it plays an elaborate game of telephone with a main database that has the information, and then updates you with the answer."

Anyway, while iPhone 4S users are awaiting their various fixes from Apple, they're apparently trying the DIY method for the battery issue

TechNewsWorld says "one of the minor fixes users have found success with is turning off the feature that automatically adjusts to new time zone." The theory is that the iOS 5 GPS feature is constantly trying to fix on the time zone that the user is in, thus sucking battery life.

"Corrupted contact data" may be at the root of the problem, says VentureBeat: "Clearing the contacts data and re-uploading it has fixed the battery drain problem" for some.

Another big drain on iPhone 4S batteries is wireless Internet (Wi-Fi) technology. With Wi-Fi on constantly, battery life is always being drained. Go to Settings and turn off the Wi-Fi option, and battery life should improve by up to 25%.

3. Turn Off All The Location Services

Things like "Find My Friends," "Find My iPhone," and the battery-sucking Siri app all use location-based services. Head over to Settings -> Location Services and turn off anything you don't regularly use.

4. Switch From Vibration Setting

You would think having your phone on "vibrate" might save battery power, since you're not having the Apple product use the ringer. Instead, vibrating your phone can sometimes drain the battery faster, especially if you use it for other things as well. To turn off the vibration, go to Settings -> Sounds.

5. Set Brightness Level at Medium or Low, Not Auto or High

Keeping your iPhone 4S brightness on "Auto" means that when it's dark, your screen automatically increases its brightness, which drains the battery and can lead to more long-term battery problems. Keep brightness at medium or even low, and never set it on high.

6. Turn Notifications Off

Notifications are one of the best and most convenient things about the iPhone 4S and iOS 5, but it costs users a lot of battery power. Turning off your push notifications -- or all of your notifications -- will save you some battery life in the short term and in the long run. Go to Settings -> Notifications, and click Off for any unneeded app notifications on your Apple product.

7. Turn Off iCloud

Doing this means you'll lose all the iCloud features that come with iOS 5, but it will save you a lot of battery by disabling all of the syncing features that iCloud uses on iOS 5. Go to Settings -> iCloud -> Documents & Data, and change Use Cellular to Off.

8. Turn Diagnostics and Usage Reports Off

If you have enabled diagnostics and are still experiencing battery loss, stop sending Apple your information. Sending out that much data will drain battery life, and lead to more battery problems for your iPhone 4S. To disable diagnostics and usage reports, go to Settings -> General -> About -> Diagnostics & Usage, and click Don't Send.

9. Disable Bluetooth.

Like Vibrations and Brightness, this is a setting you don't think will affect your battery power as much as it does. To turn it off, go to Settings -> General -> Bluetooth -> Off.

10 Features We Want For iPad 3

Is it too early to start talking about the iPad 3? We don’t think so! Apple announced the iPad 2 in January of this year, so it follows that iPad 3 will make headlines in just a few months. Here are the 10 upgrades we want most.

The second generation iPad gave us built-in cameras for photos, video, and FaceTime; a significantly faster processor; and an overall thinner, lighter device. Then we got iOS 5 just last week, which has brought a lot of upgrades to iDevices that we’ve been waiting (er, begging?) for, like untethered devices that don’t require syncing, and the glory that is iCloud.

But Apple’s next big refresh will undoubtedly be the iPad hardware itself (barring a major update to the MacBook Air before the end of the year, which is certainly possible). So here’s what do we hope to see, along with odds on it actually happening.

1. Retina Display

More than anything else, our most-wanted feature is a stunning, high-definition screen with the same 326 pixels per inch as the iPhone 4. Science tells us that this is well above the pixels-per-inch required to make it impossible for our human eyes to detect pixelization, which makes Apple’s Retina Display screen every bit as sharp as seeing something in the real world with your own eyes. But making a tiny iPhone screen with this kind of resolution is one thing. Making a screen that’s more than four times the size of the iPhone’s with Retina Display is a significantly bigger challenge. But we know Apple’s been working on this for a while now, and iPad 3 should be when it finally makes its debut. Imagine the possibilities for gaming, photography, video, and ebooks with true HD on a tablet-sized screen.
Odds: 90%. It’s not guaranteed, but it’s pretty darn close.

2. New Camera

The iPad 2′s camera is decent, but nothing special. The camera on the new iPhone 4S is a thing of beauty, capable of taking truly stunning, high-res images and 1080p HD video. The iPad deserves a camera at least as good, if not better. And the iPad’s additional internal space should make it easy to fit an even better camera in there than what the iPhone 4S has. Hopefully it’ll have a flash, too.
Odds: 100%. A powerful new camera in the iPad 3 is as close to a sure thing as you can get when it comes to Apple.

3. Quad-core A6 Processor

The iPad 2 is already pretty darn fast, but when it comes to personal computing, you’re either the fastest, or you’re forgotten. The iPad 2 gave us the A5 dual-core processor, so it logically follows that iPad 3 will take another big jump in speed. And if it has that rumored Retina Display, it’ll need a quad-core to handle all that high-def imagery.
Odds: 75%. It’s a matter of public record that Apple’s working on a quad-core “A6″ chip. The only question is whether or not it will be ready in time for the next iPad.

4. Thunderbolt

Time was, I’d've loved to have seen a USB port on one side of my iPad, because having to transfer everything via the cord that comes with it for syncing can take quite a while, and kinda sucks. But now that syncing is done wirelessly, the only real draw for connecting my iPad to another device would be the convenience of speedy data transfers. And nothing’s faster than the blazing speeds of Thunderbolt. In conjunction with that crazy fast new processor, Thunderbolt would come in mighty handy — but only if it doesn’t require a funky adapter.
Odds
: 50%. It’s still a technology in its infancy, so it simply may not be ready yet. But Apple wants Thunderbolt to overtake USB as the new standard, and there’s no better way to make that happen than by incorporating it into its most popular products.

5. Siri

There’s nothing about the iPhone 4S generating more buzz than Siri, the interactive voice command app that’s built so seamlessly into iOS 5 that it resembles a powerful artificial intelligence. Of course Apple is planning to bring Siri to the iPad, and I’m curious to see if the unique qualities of the iPad will give Siri any different capabilities.

: 100%. Total no-brainer.

6. >64GB of Flash Storage

The iPad has maxed out at 64GB of storage space since it debuted, but with the various forms of media available for the device — music, movies, books, apps — getting bigger and more complex all the time, it’s getting harder and harder to squeeze everything you want onto your tablet. Many users (myself included) find themselves having to pick and choose which media to keep on their iPad at any given time, and frequently having to switch out what’s there. It’s high time Apple crammed at least 128GB in there, though the thought of a 256GB iPad makes me drool unashamedly.
Odds
: 60%. It’s all about the size of those flash chipsets. Over time, they grow smaller while maintaining — or increasing — their storage space. Apple will gladly put as much as they can in there, but at the end of the day, it’s kinda out of their hands.

7. Redesigned Form

The original iPad and the iPad 2 look very similar, with that inch-wide bezel on top and some minor variations in curvature on the back. The iPad 2 is thinner and lighter (and comes in white), but from a distance, you’d be hard-pressed to tell a first-gen from a second. Every tablet maker out there, from Amazon to Samsung, has copied Apple’s tablet hardware design. If Apple doesn’t push forward, it won’t be able to keep setting the standard that everyone else follows. Personally, I’d like to see a thinner bezel/frame surrounding the screen that’s part of an all-aluminum unibody. But that’s just me. It could be cool to see flattened sides similar to the iPhone 4, instead of the beveled sides the iPad has now.
Odds: 40%. Apple seems pretty happy with what they have design-wise, and tweaking the form factor will be driven more by the device’s internal features than any aesthetic concerns (even though aesthetics are very important to Apple).

8. Fingerprint-Resistant Screen

This may seem like a small thing, but anybody who’s spent a few hours with an iPad knows exactly what I’m talking about. The iPad is a fingerprint magnet, and can get so bad after just an hour or so of use, that frankly it can be downright embarrassing to whip it out in public, and then have to buff it off with the edge of your shirt. With all the technology available today, there has to be a scientific way to keep those fingerprints at bay, and it’s a feature that’s long overdue.
Odds: 70%. Apple owns a patent for an oil-resistant substance called an “oleophobic,” which we assume they plan to apply to the glass surface of touchscreen devices. The only question is, when will it be ready for prime time?

9. Solar Charging

Apple’s had a major emphasis on going green over the last few years, and what’s greener than harnessing solar energy? The ability to simply lay your iPad in a windowsill to recharge sounds downright progressive, and would make it the world’s greenest tablet.
Odds: 15%. Apple actually has a really cool idea for embedding solar cells beneath a touchscreen, but it’s almost a given that this technology would be implemented in the iPhone before the iPad ever got it.

iPad 3 is Now Going Into Production

Rumors spread that the iPad 3 has begun its first production run on October 14. Apple has been in the news nonstop as of late with the death of their beloved icon Steve Jobs, the release of iOS 5 (despite its headaches at the moment), iCloud, and hotter sales of the iPhone 4S.

Many users are expecting some revolutionary new features in Apple iPad 3 including new A6 processor, "Retina Display" which would provide resolution upto an unbelievable 2048x1536, etc.

The much awaited Apple iPad3 tablet would arrive by this year end, a financial analyst - Chris Caso, has claimed quoting sources. According to him, the initial production would be in small numbers and is likely to be between 600,000 to one million. The iPad 2 and iPhone 4S are already being labeled as the hot ticket items on people’s wanted lists. Apple’s iPad 3 may be within those numbers, but it’s uncertain at what extent given the reality of fourth quarter sales.

Although a number of tablet makers are launching rival products, including Amazon with the Kindle Fire, Apple’s current closest competitor, Samsung, has been fighting against Apple in court to avoid injunctions on the sales of its devices. It currently faces bans on new tablet sales in only two markets, Germany and Australia, and yesterday had a bit of welcome news when a U.S. District Judge decided not to impose a ban on its new tablets in the U.S. for now.

Steve Jobs' final weeks

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs died on Wednesday at the age of 56 after a long battle with a rare form of pancreatic cancer. RIP Steve everyone will miss you especially the apple fans!!

Outpourings of sympathy swept across the globe as state leaders, business rivals and fans paid respect to the man who touched the daily lives of countless millions through the Macintosh computer, iPod, iPhone and iPad. 

"A visionary, a creative genuis, will be missed by all especially Apple Inc. Will be remembered for the i-technology, imac, ipod, itunes, iphone and ipad others could only follow R.I.P."

Steve Jobs spent his final weeks as he had spent most of his life - in tight control of his choices, the New York Times reported.

 For Steve, it was all about living life on his own terms and not wasting a moment with things he didn't think were important. He was aware that his time on earth was limited. He wanted control of what he did with the choices that were left."

In his final months, Jobs's home - a large and comfortable but relatively modest brick house in a residential neighborhood - was surrounded by security guards. His driveway's gate was flanked by two black SUVs.

He invited a close friend, the physician Dean Ornish to join him for sushi at one of his favorite restaurants Jin Sho. He said goodbye to longtime colleagues including the venture capitalist John Doerr, the Apple board member Bill Campbell and the Disney Chief Executive Robert A.lger. He offered Apple's executives advice on unveiling the iPhone 4S, which occured Tuesday. He spoke to his viographer, Walter Isaacson. He started a new drug regime, and told some friends that there was reason for hope.

In his final days, he became so weak that it was hard for him to walk up the stairs of his own home anymore, his wife Laurene said.

Apple's Steve Jobs, visionary leader, dead at 56

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Steve Jobs, who transformed the worlds of personal computing, music and mobile phones, died on Wednesday at the age of 56 after a years-long battle with pancreatic cancer.

The co-founder of Apple Inc, one of the world's great entrepreneurs, was surrounded by his wife and immediate family when he died in Palo Alto, California. Other details were not immediately available.

His death was announced by Apple and sparked an immediate outpouring of sadness and sympathy from world leaders, competitors and other businessmen including Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

The Silicon Valley icon who gave the world the iPod, iPhone and iPad had stepped down as chief executive of the world's largest technology company in August, handing the reins to long-time lieutenant Tim Cook.

He was deemed the heart and soul of a company that rivals Exxon Mobil as the most valuable in America.

"Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve," Apple said in a statement.

"His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts."

Apple paid homage to their visionary leader by changing their website to a big black-and-white photograph of him with the caption "Steve Jobs: 1955-2011." The flags outside the company's headquarters at 1 Infinite Loop flew at half mast.

Jobs' health had been a controversial topic for years and his battle with a rare form of pancreatic cancer a deep concern to Apple fans and investors.

In past years, even board members have confided to friends their concern that Jobs, in his quest for privacy, was not being forthcoming enough with directors about the true condition of his health.

Now, despite much investor confidence in Cook, who has stood in for his boss during three leaves of absence, there remain concerns about whether Apple would stay a creative force to be reckoned with in the longer term without its visionary.

Jobs died one day after the consumer electronics powerhouse unveiled its latest iPhone, the gadget that transformed mobile communications and catapulted Apple to the highest echelons of the tech world.

His death triggered an immediate outpouring of sympathy.

"The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come," Gates said. "For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it's been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely."

Outside an Apple store in New York, mourners laid candles, bouquets of flowers, an apple and an iPod Touch in a makeshift memorial.

"I think half the world found out about his death on an Apple device," said Robbie Sokolowsky, 32, an employee for an online marketing company, who lit a candle outside the store.

Cook said in a statement that Apple planned to hold a celebration of Jobs' life for employees "soon".

A college dropout, Buddhist and son of adoptive parents, Jobs started Apple Computer with friend Steve Wozniak in 1976. The company soon introduced the Apple 1 computer.

But it was the Apple II that became a huge success and gave Apple its position as a critical player in the then-nascent PC industry, culminating in a 1980 initial public offering that made Jobs a multimillionaire.

Despite the subsequent success of the Macintosh computer, Jobs' relationship with top management and the board soured. The company removed most of his powers and then in 1985 he was fired.

Apple's fortunes waned after that. However, its purchase of NeXT -- the computer company Jobs founded after leaving Apple -- in 1997 brought him back into the fold. Later that year, he became interim CEO and in 2000, the company dropped "interim" from his title.

Along the way Jobs also had managed to revolutionize computer animation with his other company, Pixar, but it was the iPhone in 2007 that secured his legacy in the annals of modern technology history.

Forbes estimates Jobs' net worth at $6.1 billion in 2010, placing him in 42nd place on the list of America's richest. It was not immediately known how his estate would be handled.

Six years ago, Jobs had talked about how a sense of his mortality was a major driver behind that vision.

"Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life," Jobs said during a Stanford commencement ceremony in 2005.

"Because almost everything -- all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure -- these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important."

"Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart."

iPad 3 delayed by Apple's ambitions

New York - Those of us salivating over the prospects of getting on our hands on the iPad3 in 2011 will likely be disappointed by all signs that point to mid 2012.
Apple always manages to astound the market by confounding tech analysts and consumers alike, producing innovative and slick products. So despite it’ stock (AAPL.O) closing at an all-time high Monday, $411.63, rapidly spreading news of the delay of the iPad 3 will deject millions of potential customers anticipating the next great lifestyle component.
The iPad 3’s 9.7-inch is rumoured to be enhanced with the so-called retina display technology (utilized on the iPhone 4) capable of 2048 x 1536 display, twice as many pixels as its predecessor.
Tech watchers have pointed out that certain technological restrictions are constraining speedier development of Apple’s next generation tablet, likely to be lighter and thinner if history is any guide.
Digitimes of Taiwan, a tech firm reported August 16 that Apple had canceled some component orders from Sharp, Samsung and LG that were otherwise intended for a 2011 iPad 3 launch.
On its own, the cancellation does not indicate such a long delay, but taken together with two other factors makes a mid-2012 release more likely.
In order produce a display four times as sharp as the iPad 2 on a 9.7-inch screen the backlighting source and mobile chip processor will need to be more powerful without depleting the unit’s battery power so rapidly. The chip used on current iPad 2s, the A5, cannot meet those demands, whereas the Quad Core A6 mobile processor will not be ready until the middle of 2012, according to the Linley Group.
As for the other reason for Apple’s delay, Mark Moskowitz of JP Morgan wrote:
We do not expect iPad 3 this year, but there's no rush. The other tablet entrants have stumbled. Offerings by MMI [Motorola Mobility] and RIM have been the latest disappointments. Also, we had the opportunity to demo Sony's tablet before its launch. We were not impressed. Sony's tablet lacks the refined, sleek feel of the iPad. We felt that the sloping or bezel-like back of the Sony tablet feels more like petrified, folded-over pages than a 21st century consumer electronics device.

iPhone 5 release date in China

Motorola and Google deal more than just patents, and it’s more expensive than before. Plus, Android’s next battle may be outside of United States.

Motorola Mobility and Google deal, inking the whopping $12.5 Bn, is not actually the initial amount that was offered by the search engine giant. According to the report posted by Bloomberg, the Mountain View, California-based company has initially offered $30 per share, but the advisers of the smartphone manufacturer reportedly countered the amount.

The website quotes the document filing that also revealed Google’s offers just to acquire the mobile-centric company. After the August 1 offer worth $30, Google reportedly increased the offer to $37 a share, and still on the same date, the search giant lifted the offer again to $40 a share, which is the final price that secured the biggest Google acquisition ever if the deal will push through.

On the company’s first press release related to the acquisition, Google said the deal is to protect the Android ecosystem from competitors in legal battles — like Apple’s multiple suits against Samsung Mobile, Apple’s suit against HTC, the Taiwan-based company behind the popular Evo 4G smartphone, and others including Microsoft’s. Apparently, Google’s Chairman of the board Eric Schmidt recently confessed, because he’s an honest person, that the Motorola Mobility deal is not just for patents, but also for the tapping of Motorola’s homegrown talents.

“We did it for more than just patents,” reveals Google’s Schmidt in an interview with Salesforce.com Inc’s Marc Benioff, adding that “the Motorola team has some amazing products.” The Google boss also mentioned the Razr as one of the biggest products of the mobile phone company.

Can Google create another “Razr” phone in the so-called post PC era? Apparently, the Razr phone never met the iPhone, which is arguably the most popular smartphone in United States based on the number of sales. Google on the other hand, is the company behind the open handset alliance, the Google Android powering the new popular devices from Samsung, HTC, Motorola and other companies like Sony Ericsson and LG. New emerging companies like Huawei and computer companies like Acer, Lenovo and Dell also tapping the new platform that also powers tablet PCs, or the new emerging device in the era of handheld tech products that can connect to the internet, and consume media in a fast and intuitive way.

Apple started the tablet market with the company’s iPad that recently received the refresh, the iPad 2. Compared to the tablet market which is still not the strongest point of Android, the Android’s smartphone dominance is quite obvious. In a new report posted by multiple websites, the Apple iPhone 5 will hit the China Telecom next month, a wireless carrier that caters 108 million subscribers, which is as big as wireless carriers here in United States. How many subscribers can Apple tap here? Well, maybe millions especially if the Chinese telecom will give the subscribers the proper subsidy.

But Google Android is not into “sitting pretty,” because the smartphone operating system is expected to give its users the biggest refresh ever, the Android 4.0 that will bridge the gap between smartphones and tablets. Revealed by multiple tech sites, the 4.0 update will be the operating system version that the future Android smartphones and tablets will use, similar to Apple’s iPad and iPhone connection.

The new operating system update is also expected to include a phone, or the device that will launch and showcase the software, which is obviously the entry of the Android ecosystem against the iPhone 5, aside from other popular devices like the Samsung Galaxy S II, the ARM processor-powered smartphone from the South Korea-based company, and the new Motorola Droid Bionic, the 4G Long Term Evolution smartphone of Verizon Wireless powered by the Texas Instruments OMAP4 chip. Unlike the exclusive Droid Bionic, the Samsung Galaxy S II is available across the world.

Other devices from the Taiwan-based company HTC, or the other Korean manufacturer LG, China’s Huawei etc are also expected to introduce their own “iPhone killers” this year and early next year.

The Google and Motorola Mobility are also expected to give the Apple iPhone 5 the challenge, most likely next year.

Motorola Xoom Android 3.1 Tablet Review

The Apple iPad may still reign supreme in the world of consumer tablets, but the Android side of the equation is quickly picking up steam. While early Android tablets only ran on blown-up versions of the smartphone OS, Android 3.0 Honeycomb introduced a tablet-centric version of the platform with several tablet-centric optimizations. And the first to take advantage of these optimizations was the Motorola Xoom.

Now that it’s been officially updated to Android 3.1 (some have even gotten up to 3.2) and it’s competing against several other Honeycomb tablets, how does the Xoom stack up? Let’s have a look.  

Key Features and Specifications

The version of the Motorola Xoom that I had to review as the Xoom MZ604. This comes with 32GB of internal storage capacity and Wi-Fi connectivity, but there is no 3G radio to be seen. The juice comes by way of an NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor with a ULP GeForce GPU and 1GB of RAM.

As has become the norm for so many tablets in this range, the Motorola Xoom comes with a 10.1-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen with an effective resolution of 800×1280 pixels. That works out to 149 ppi pixel density, which is a touch higher than the 132ppi that you find on the current iPad 2. Other key specs include the 730 grams of weight, stereo speakers, gyroscope, accelerometer, microSD expansion, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP support, 5MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, mini-HDMI out, and microUSB port.

Overall Design and Usability

It won the award at CES 2011 and Motorola is quick to point that out on the packaging for the Xoom.

In terms of the device itself, you get a series of high quality plastics with a very smooth back. The screen is extremely glossy, so like so many other touchscreens, it gets riddled with greasy fingerprints very quickly. Since it is Honeycomb, most of what you’ll be doing is in landscape mode and everything has been laid out accordingly.

The (unlabeled) connection ports are on the bottom. Strangely, while there is a microUSB port, it cannot be used for charging; you have to use the provided wall charger to top up the internal battery. That takes away from a fair bit of versatility, especially when you’re on the road. The microSD card slot is on the top (which didn’t work until Android 3.1 update), as well as the 3.5mm headset jack. Volume buttons are along the left edge.

One thing that I didn’t like was the placement of the power button. It’s on the back of the Xoom, in the same part of the housing as the camera, flash, and one of the speakers. I suppose this makes for a more natural movement when holding the tablet, but I would have preferred they stuck to an edge like nearly everyone else.

General Performance and Battery Life

I can’t say that I was terribly displeased with the Xoom, but there really wasn’t much else going on that would make me choose the Xoom over the several other Honeycomb alternatives out there. It is on the heavier side of things at 730 grams, which is 50 grams more than the Asus Eee Pad Transformer (sans keyboard dock, of course) and nearly 200 grams more than the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. That’s some serious extra heft.

The orientation sensor seemed to be a bit on the laggy side, as it could take some time before the screen would switch between landscape and portrait modes. Similarly, swiping between the different homescreens wasn’t quite as smooth as I had hoped. This seems to be a common concern with several Android tablets and it’s something that I hope is addressed in future updates; maybe it’s just a software/firmware thing.

As far as battery life is concerned, your mileage will certainly vary. Under moderate usage, I was able to get a little more than a day out of the Xoom. This is with Wi-Fi turned on and a couple of apps constantly running in the background. Lighter usage could see about three days.  

Quadrant Benchmark Score

To test the performance of the Motorola Xoom, I ran the full benchmark on Quadrant Standard v1.1.7. This benchmark measures the performance of the CPU, memory, graphics, and other related areas. The overall score achieved by the Xoom on the first try was just 1593 (as pictured), but I ran the test again after rebooting the device and got a score of 1739.

Some people have argued that benchmarks for Android devices can be a little unreliable, but that’s what we have to go with. That range of scores puts the Xoom right in line with other Tegra2-powered Honeycomb tablets; I ran the benchmark on an LG Optimus Pad for comparison and got a score of 1700 even.

Conclusion

The Motorola Xoom is a solid product, but it is difficult to recommend it over similar Honeycomb tablets. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a lot lighter and the Eee Pad Transformer has that optional keyboard dock, for instance. I do like the slightly smaller footprint that the Xoom has (compared to the Eee Pad), but if you wanted smaller, you likely would be considering an 8.9 or even 7.0 inch tablet instead.

The placement of the power button will be hit and miss, depending on your preferences, but I really dislike the lack of support for USB charging. The speakers are reasonably loud, but because they are in the back, the directionality of the sound may not be ideal. I like Android tablets and I think they have a bright future, but the Xoom is very middle of the road for me right now… which is pretty much the story of most $399-$599 Honeycomb tablets these days.

iPhone 4 remains top-selling US smartphone

Despite iPhone 5 approaching, Apple iPhone 4 is still NO 1 hot sale smartphone.

Analyst T. Michael Walkley with Canaccord Genuity revealed in a note to investors on Tuesday that checks with U.S. carriers indicate that sales of the iPhone 4 remain on top ahead of the iPhone 5 debut, despite the fact that the iPhone 4 is more than a year old.

"Our checks indicated strong sales of the iPhone 4, as it remained the top selling smartphone at AT&T and Verizon despite increasing consumer expectations for the iPhone 5 launch," he wrote.

"During the holiday season, we anticipate strong sales of the iPhone 5, as we anticipate a strong global launch with increased distribution to new carriers including Sprint in the U.S. market."

Walkley's research found that the iPhone 4 remained the top-selling handset at both AT&T and Verizon in August. In addition, the $50 entry-level $50 iPhone 3GS was the second strongest selling handset at AT&T. Verizon does not offer the iPhone 3GS.

The iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS beat out the $200 Samsung Infuse 4G, which was the third-best selling handset at AT&T. And at Verizon, the Samsung Charge 4G came in second, while the HTC Thunderbolt 4G was third.

"While Motorola Mobility and RIM enjoyed stronger sell-through trends in 2010, our (first half of calendar 2011) checks indicate a clear trend toward increasing share for Apple, HTC and Samsung," Walkley wrote.

In addition to strong sales of the iPhone 4, he also found that the 3G-capable iPad 2 is the top-selling tablet at both AT&T and Verizon, which are the only two carriers that offer the iPad in the U.S.

"Based on solid demand trends for iPhone/iPad, poor sell-through trends for competing tablet offerings, and the ramping iOS ecosystem driving longer-term replacement sales, we believe Apple will maintain dominant value share of both the tablet and smartphone markets to drive healthy long-term earnings growth," Walkley said.

IFA 2011: Top 9 Things We'd Love to See But Won't

While Berlin's annual consumer electronics fair has previously been a showcase of home appliances from TVs to fridges, it has become a battleground for manufacturers of wireless gadgets, according to Bloomberg News.

At IFA 2011 this week, Sony Corp., LG Electronics Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co., among other device-makers, will unveil their new tablets/and or smartphones.

We've listed some things that we'd love to see at the tech show in Berlin, but wont:

9. Samsung Engineers Rubbing Elbows with Apple's.

Although Samsung has been producing chips for Apple's mobile devices, the two have been at a war that gets uglier each day. The maker of the iPhone, iPad and iMac has sued Samsung for patent infringement in every country mapped by Google. What's worse, Apple is asking the local courts to stop the sale of Galaxy S 2 and Galaxy S Tab on grounds that they're "slavishly" imitating Apple. What's even worse is that Samsung is running out of brilliant ideas, now saying that Stanley Kubrick's 1968 sci-fi film "2001: A Space Odyssey" invented the tablet.

8. Glasses-Free 3-D Devices That Actually Work.

Toshiba has already unveiled the world's first glasses-free 3D laptop, which uses a lenticular screen and integrated webcam. And LG Electronics has already released the LG Optimus 3D, which claims to offer "the world's first 3D experience on a smartphone." But the technology is still in its infancy. Like the LCD screens of laptops more than 10 years ago, these devices would likely show blurred pictures when viewed at the wrong angle or when exposed to sunlight. What could be more interesting is Sony's HMZ personal 3-D viewer, a futuristic little helmet that lets you watch 3-D movies. But would anybody actual sit alone with this $800 visor with an OLED screen? Nintendo released bulky Virtual Boy headgears for gaming 20 years ago, and the device flopped.

But Sony is releasing devices (one with a folded design, and another that looks like the Nintendo DS), which depart from the usual square, flat slab-style of the present tablets. Not only that, the devices are pre-loaded with games and have access to the PlayStation network. Talking about games, Nintendo is already unveiling the WiiU, its next generation gaming console that also works like an iPad. Amazon Inc., the world's largest online retailer, is also gearing up to sell its own tablet. But Apple's iPad has 75 percent of the tablet market. And few are buying the others because Jobs has created functional fashion statements (not the turtleneck shirts, but the sleek, easy-to-use products iPad, iPod and iPhone).

When it comes to iPad killer, it is so funny that some “Experts” predict Amazon will be the iPad killer: while Amazon entering the tablet market may give Apple a legitimate competitor in the space. LOL, Amazon has good sense of humor.

5. People Flocking Intel's Ultrabooks.

Apple has been providing us with brilliantly designed devices, but the problem with a single manufacturer is pricing power. Apple's devices are not cheap (the $3,000 MacBook Pro for example), and in the absence of competition, it can charge more for the iPad 3. One qualified challenger is the Ultrabook, a new class of mobile computer being promoted by Intel Corp. The Ultrabook will have the performance of today's laptops with tablet-like features. While the Intel device is expected to be more powerful than the iPad -- it is unlikely to take market share away from Apple. Although Intel has been bribing developers for more apps for the Ultrabook, Apple is already way ahead as more than available 100,000 applications optimized for the iPad that can be downloaded from the App Store, in addition to the more than 300,000 iPhone apps that can also work for the Apple tablet.

4. iPhone 5's Most Awaited Curtain Raising.

After Jobs decided to only talk about some cloud and updates to platforms for Apple devices at a developers' conference in June, there has been speculation that Apple won't be releasing the iPhone 5 this year. Apple has been unveiling a new iPhone every June for the past four years. Is it production problems, or is Apple still trying to add more features to the new iPhone?

3. A New HP Mobile Device (That Costs $99).

After Hewlett-Packard slashed the price of its HP TouchPad from $499 to $99, the HP tablet has suddenly become the hottest on the market. HP paid $1.2 billion for Palm Inc. in July last year, so it's unlikely the TouchPad is the only new webOS device in its pipeline. Since HP is killing its mobile devices business and is getting rid of the inventory, why not release other devices also at $99? It would not be surprising if HP makes an about-face, given that the webOS devices have now penetrated the market following the fire sales. Or it could wait until someone jail-breaks the HP TouchPad and gets it to run on Android.

2. Device That Shows the Glory That Was Nokia.

Finland's Nokia was previously the world's largest seller of smartphones. And including the $30 phones and other lower-end models, it is still the largest seller of mobile phones. After retiring the outdated Symbian and changing its mind with the Meego, Nokia is releasing its first batch of Windows-based phones. While Windows is the number one operating system for PCs, nobody -- except probably Bill Gates -- owns a smartphone running on Windows. With Microsoft still building apps for the Windows mobile ecosystem, it won't be at the IFA 2011 when Nokia will take back the crown from Apple and Samsung. Maybe next year.

Google's search engine -- the world's most popular Web site -- is known for its classic, "less is more" design. Actually, Apple Will Be Fine Without Steve Jobs- From Businessinsider

In the wake of the terrible and sad news that Steve Jobs has resigned as CEO, Apple''s stock is down about 5% in aftermarket trading.

This is actually barely any drop at all.

And that suggests two things:

First, that the market was expecting this news (and was obviously wise to be expecting it, given Steve's medical leave and health condition).

Second, the market thinks Apple will do just fine without Steve.

And I think the market's right about the latter, at least over the next couple of years.

Steve Jobs' contribution to Apple cannot be overstated. Steve singlehandedly resurrected the company after it had been run into the ground by idiots and then left for dead. In about 15 short years, Steve led Apple from tech-industry roadkill to the most valuable company in the world.

Under Steve's leadership, Apple has produced products that are as beautiful and revolutionary as they are coveted and beloved. It is likely that the world will never again witness such an amazing and inspiring performance by a founder and chief executive officer of a company. So, losing Steve is obviously a tremendous blow to Apple.

That said, Steve's departure comes at a good time.

Thanks to Steve's vision, Apple has created two massive new product categories out of thin air: iPhone and iPad. These products did not exist 6 years ago--at any company--and now they are much bigger than Apple's legacy PC business. 

These two products are also very early in their lifecycles in terms of global market penetration. This means that Apple should be able to drive enormous growth in both categories for years without a revolutionary new vision. The company just needs to stay one step ahead of the competition and maintain its obsessive focus on user experience and quality. And the latter now appears to be deeply baked into Apple's DNA.

Apple has also pulled off one of the hardest and most valuable tricks in technology: It has created a "closed system," or platform, that provides customers and developers with a major incentive to continue using Apple products.

Designing closed systems is risky and difficult--it is easy to get outflanked by more ubiquitous platforms, the way Apple was outflanked by Microsoft in the 1990s.

But as Microsoft and others have demonstrated in the past--and as Apple is demonstrating now--once you own the dominant platform, your market power is extraordinary. 

With an installed base of hundreds of millions of iPhone, iPad, and Mac users, and with so much of the world coalescing around the Apple platform, Apple is in an extremely strong competitive position.

Apple also has a management team that is used to running the company without Steve around. Tim Cook has already demonstrated that he can lead Apple day-to-day, and it is likely that Steve has been grooming him to take over as CEO. There will no doubt be power struggles in the wake of Steve's departure--there always are--but Apple is in much better shape to handle Steve's departure than it would have been two years ago.

In short, Apple is now a diversified, global company with three mega-hit products: iPhones, iPads, and Macs. iPhones and iPads are still early in their adoption curves, and Macs still have only a small slice of global PC market share. And the Apple platform--iOS and iTunes--ties all these products together, providing an incentive for customers to standardize around Apple.

So even if Apple never develops another new product category, it should have years of strong growth ahead of it.

And if, by now, enough of Steve Jobs has been transferred to the DNA of the company, even some of his "vision" can be maintained.

Eventually, if Apple is to continue to revolutionize the world the way it has over the last 15 years, the company will need another visionary. Perhaps Tim Cook can grow into that role. Or perhaps Apple has another quiet genius waiting in the wings.  But the company has time to find this person.

Again, it's impossible to overstate the value of Steve Jobs to Apple, and losing him is a huge blow to the company and community.

But Steve has done such an amazing job over the past 15 years that--for several years anyway--the company should be fine without him.

HP TouchPad isn't even iPad 2 killer, let alone iPad 3

I just read a piece of news: iPad 2 & 3 tablet rivals, as HP will release upgraded TouchPad. So funny.  Generally speaking, as the title shows: HP TouchPad isn't even iPad 2 killer, let alone iPad 3.

This is more believable: Yesterday's shock news of HP's restructuring included the death of its webOS tablet and smartphone lines. By the time HP bought Palm, its best times were behind it. Years of under-funding had driven away its best talent, and left it in a state where it wasn't capable of capitalizing on the webOS promise. HP arrived like a white knight, but failed to turn the business around quickly enough to respond to the competition. HP has no ability to release new TouchPad, believe it or not.

Apple iPad is a milestone for Tablets, iPad 2 is selling well. iPad 3 has more expect. Apple always the best and give us so much fun.

Any other Tablets are copycat and losers to some extend.
